Readers often misinterpret Scripture for a simple reason—our culture is very different from the ancient cultures of the Bible. For example, Westerners are often “blind” to the social dynamics of honor and shame.

The Honor-Shame Paraphrase helps you understand the Bible according to its original cultural context. We highlight social nuances to unlock the meaning of Scripture in insightful and accessible ways. This series is ideal for personal devotions, teaching preparation, ministry preparation, Bible studies, and life groups.

The themes of honor and shame saturate the letter of 1 Peter, perhaps more than any other book in the Bible. Learn how the apostle Peter equips and inspires Christians to live honorably in the face of social shame. This paraphrase is completed with a socio-historical introduction, theological summary, outline, and further resources.

ENDORSEMENTS

“Here is an imaginative approach to First Peter . . . Georges captures well the cultural overtones and undertones of this ancient pastoral letter and its language of honor and shame. Lively paraphrase and imaginative dialogue between First Peter and two putative letters of a pastoral colleague in Cappadocia tease out the honor-shame nuances of this Petrine gem.”
—Dr. John H. Elliott, Professor Emeritus, University of San Francisco, author of 1 Peter, Anchor Bible Commentary

“Georges' paraphrase helps us read 1 Peter from a fresh perspective. The Bible does not change, but our perspective on the biblical message can change. Georges understand this. His clear and simple prose sheds light on the pervasive influence of honor and shame within Peter’s letter. As a result, readers will gain a new appreciation for the relevance of 1 Peter for our daily lives.”
—Dr. Jackson Wu, professor to Chinese pastors, author of Saving God’s Face.

1 Peter An HonorShame Paraphrase edition by Jayson Georges Religion Spirituality eBooks

For years now, Jayson has provided a much-needed perspective on how to better study the Bible in a way that exposes some of the shortcomings we have as Western readers. His writings on honor and shame continue to fill many holes in our mission theology and even our own personal enjoyment of scripture. What makes his works different from other great, equally important writers (Wu, Mischke, Richards and O'Brien, etc.) is how accessible it is for the masses. Not only does he have a healthy respect and view of scripture, he also makes it practical to the average reader. The 1 Peter paraphrase is no different.

First of all, it must be said that this is NOT a new translation of 1 Peter. It is merely a paraphrase. It should not replace scripture, but be used as a supplement to deeper study. Any fears of changing God's word should be calmed immediately. When I study this book, I feel like I am reading Peter for the first time, but now as someone reading from an honor/shame worldview. I feel better equipped to share this story/book with people from the majority world in a much easier way than before.

If you are an American missiologist or pastor, involved at all with cross-cultural mission, or just want to read scripture in a way that fills in your blindspots as a Westerner, I strongly suggest picking this book up. I am definitely looking forward to the rest of Jayson's paraphrase series and will be adding these as essential study material for personal study and discipleship.

1 Peter An HonorShame Paraphrase edition by Jayson Georges Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

Jayson Georges' paraphrase of 1 Peter is an excellent contribution to understanding, not only the epistle itself, but the Gospel in an honour-shame context.
The paraphrase is very well done as it skillfully explains the message in a language that draws out the honour-shame perspective. For the Western reader it may seem hard to believe that this perspective is as pervasive as Jayson Georges makes it out to be; I think Georges is right.
In some places in Asia, the importance of God's saving Grace is in saving face even to the extent that the thought of loosing face fills people with fear. Jayson Georges contributes to Westerners' appreciating just how important honour has been and is to many people including the Bible writers.
I would recommend Georges' writing for Westerners; for those living in non-Western cultures and for all, as an important corrective to the values of the church in the West today. It is possible that we need to recover this understanding of the Bible for ourselves.
The introduction (Letter 1) and the summary (Letter 3) are well written and will contribute to the reader's understanding of the context. It should be combined with further studies of both the Biblical context and the local context of the reader.
An outline can be found after Letter 3. I find this useful as a summary of the most important aspects and as a quick guide to which parts of the epistle are linked to what aspect of honour-shame as it relates to people, the church and to her God.
1 Peter, Honor-Shame Paraphrase
Book Review by Martin Munyao, Ph.D. (Missiology)
1 Peter Honor-Shame Paraphrase is another reminder to all Bible readers that opening the pages of the Bible is a cross-cultural engagement. We enter into a world that is culturally and socially different from ours. Using this imaginative peace Georges has helped readers from cultures that are not Middle Easterner’s remove our cultural blinders and understand in a fresh way the first letter of Peter to Churches in dispersion. Thus using terminologies that are loaded with collective cultural dynamics such as acceptance, royalty, and loyalty, Georges helps modern readers understand abstract words in a concrete manner. By 1 Peter HSP, the reader is more confident in crossing from his cultural world into the world of Ancient Mediterranean biblical authors and readers to savor the glory in God’s word in a relevant way.
The book is divided into three sections. The first section provides the reader with the socio-cultural context of the time when 1 Peter was written. Believers who were a minority religious and social group were ostracized and disgraced by the majority culture. Their need is clearly highlighted by Diosymus, a fictional friend. The second part is Apostle Peter’s first epistle paraphrased through honor-shame lenses. The hope of status transposition from shame to honor is explicit throughout the letter. Phrases like “Though despised as homeless wanderers in the world, you have been chosen and embraced by God.” “Thanks to Jesus’ own reversal from shameful death to glorious life, we hope in a new life.” “You used to be disconnected from God’s benevolence, but now he has showered lavish favors upon you!” The letter also provides a new honor-code (a moral compass) by which Christians lived with in order to live honorable lives with God’s true honor for God’s praise by everyone. This addressed Christians who play various roles as citizens, workers, wives and husbands in the community. The new honor-code also provides a rubric by which persecuted believers ought to live by in order to honor through their suffering for their allegiance to God’s royal king, Jesus Christ. The third part is honor-shame theology which helps readers interpret their own identity in light of persecution and marginalization. Theology through honor-shame lenses makes a strong case for Christians to rest in God’s true honor and shun self-made face which leads to more shame. It does also illustrate through tangible examples what it means to belong to the new community of Jesus where believers honor one another missionally i.e. as witnesses for King Jesus and his royal kingdom in a world marred with shame and disloyalty.
The book ends with an outline of 1 Peter that breaks down for the reader theology and ethics. The book could have added a commentary from the unbeliever’s perspective; i.e. how they understood the Christians way of life as dishonorable and counter-cultural. That can avail more tools for those working in contexts where Christianity is a minority group or almost extinct today to study the prevailing ungodly culture with its self-made glory.
This book is highly recommended for seminary students at both undergraduate and graduate level. The book is also a necessary resource for pastors as a commentary on 1 Peter. Lastly, it can also be used for Bible Study with church groups.
Very good, a good look at the Bible from another view point.
Well written with an introduction to set the stage and purpose of Jason George's 1 Peter paraphrase. Unpacking the cultural meaning helped make confusing aspects of 1 Peter accessible.
While this is a very quick read, it is based on a substantial amount of research. Read the letters for enjoyment and encouragement, then follow the trail of scholarship and engage more deeply.

This paraphrase was worth the price of the book "Keep your moral compass pointed at the glory of Jesus’s name, not your own."
Jayson Georges has produced a wonderful, concise and powerful interpretation of 1 Peter that helps open western eyes to the reality and role of honor and shame not only in Scripture but in our lives and communities. The Western world needs this now not just to have a better understanding of honor-shame cultures but also to understand and experience God's power to take our shame and give us honor.
For years now, Jayson has provided a much-needed perspective on how to better study the Bible in a way that exposes some of the shortcomings we have as Western readers.
